The Christian Faith: Ten Hours of Heresies about Christ: Learning from our Mistakes
People have debated and discussed the best way to describe the identity of Jesus Christ from Bible times up to the present, with many good and bad suggestions along the way. While none of our language describes Jesus perfectly, occasionally there have arisen descriptions of Jesus so divisive, or so damaging to faith, that the Church as a body has stepped in to say definitively: ‘No, using that kind of language is a mistake.’ For us, these grand mistakes—the heresies—can actually be incredibly helpful guides, or boundaries, to the discussions we are already having about Jesus. Because of that, our goal in this course will be to amble through ten hours of some of the most injurious mistakes that people have made about Jesus and, in doing so, practice the skill of discerning where the boundaries really are when we are faced with the questions of life and ministry. Getting Jesus right is important; let’s learn together from our mistakes.
